Anna Stirr is Assistant Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. She holds a BA in music and religious studies from Lawrence University in Wisconsin, and an MA, MPhil, and PhD in ethnomusicology from Columbia University. Prior to joining the UH faculty she held postdoctoral positions in ethnomusicology and anthropology at Oxford University, and in Asian Studies at Leiden University. As a teacher, Anna is excited to introduce students to the diverse worlds of Asian performing arts, and to broader themes in Asian cultures and history, from various perspectives in the social sciences and humanities. Raging forest fires have become a major cause for concern, as they are not only resulting in fast depletion of trees but also are greatly affecting humans and wildlife. The authorities and local people have been facing a tough time containing fires that are spreading through the jungles across the country, thanks to prolonged dry spell and windy weather condition. A fresh forest fire in the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, the only hunting reserve in the country, in Myagdi district has put wildlife in Gurja area at risk. “Dry trees catch fire easily and the blaze just spreads through the jungle in no time,” said Jhak Bahadur Chhantyal, a local of Gurja. A team of security personnel was struggling to contain the fire till Thursday evening.Around 350,000 hectares of forest cover has been reported to have been destroyed by wildfires in the past 45 days. – THE KATHMANDU POST

Chaudhary Group (CG) Holdings has announced developing four hotels in the next five years, with formal acquisition of Tigerland Safari Resort and Lodge in Chitwan on Wednesday. The 35-cottage Tigerland resort spread over eight bigas is located on the edge of the Chitwan National Park. “This acquisition is the beginning of our investment in the hospitality sector,” said Arun Chaudhary, chairman and managing director of CG Holdings. “Nepal has huge possibilities in the tourism sector. So we see a good future in the years to come.” CG Holdings plans to invest Rs5 billion in four proposed hotel infrastructure, excluding land, over the next five years. According to Chaudhary, a 200-room five-star “Holiday Inn” property will be built in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, and will be completed by 2020. The company had signed a management contract with InterContinental Hotels Group, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, in March to manage the hotel The company also plans to construct another 80-room luxury five-star hotel in Sarangkot, Pokhara. The other proposed projects are 125-room business hotel at Tripureshwor and a “Wellness Retreat” with 50 cottages at Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu. In light of the ongoing court case involving the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and the Ad hoc Committee established by the Nepalese National Sports Council (NSC), which has led to a vacuum of cricket leadership in Nepal, the Board suspended the Membership of CAN for breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Articles of Association, which prohibits government interference and requires free and fair elections. The suspension means that CAN will not be entitled to receive any ICC funding. However, the Board, in its absolute discretion and considering that the players should not suffer due to this suspension, decided that the Nepal cricket teams would be able to continue to feature in ICC events. ICC management will also now work with the Nepalese cricket community, and other stakeholders, in order to assist with the development of a sustainable governance and administration structure for cricket in Nepal. The Board maintained that it doesn’t accept government interference in the affairs of its Members as it wants all its Members to work independently with the best intentions of promoting and developing the game in their respective territories in accordance with the ICC’s objectives and strategy. Electrical workers in east China's Jiangsu Province recently performed a stunning walking on high-voltage transmission lines when they were called in to repair a failure in a segment of the power lines. The 50KV transmission lines, suspended 30 meters above the ground, serve as a key channel to the provincial power grid, but a failure was spotted recently that had led to substantial loss of electricity. One worker, dressed in electrical protective clothing, was sent up on line by an aerial lift before he walked toward the faulty part along the power lines. It was the first time in China that a electrical bucket truck was used to deliver electrical workers on the ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission lines. "Through the insulated lift arm of the truck, we can quickly send the worker up on line to fix the failure. It's very efficient since previously the workers had to climb the tower, which was laborious and dangerous," said Zhou Bingling, an engineer of the Jiangsu Electric Power Company.Incredible footage shows power workers walking on wires through the clouds in China. On April 25th 2015 a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal leaving thousands dead and thousand injured. Yet one year on the thousands of people who lost everything in the disaster are still living in temporary shelters and tents made from salvaged wood covered with corrugated metal sheets. Although little progress has been made in rebuilding the many homes destroyed as a result of the quake, aid agencies in the country are helping the population to rebuild their lives. One of those organisations is the UK based Catholic aid agency CAFOD. The agency and its partners, were on the front line in the immediate aftermath of the disaster reaching hundreds of thousands of people with vital aid, including food, shelter and hygiene and sanitation kits and warm materials to help them through the winter. Director of CAFOD’s partner Caritas Nepal, Fr. Silas Bogati said that the Caritas Confederation has reached out to 350 thousand people.

In light of the ongoing court case involving the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and the Ad hoc Committee established by the Nepalese National Sports Council (NSC), which has led to a vacuum of cricket leadership in Nepal, the Board suspended the Membership of CAN for breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Articles of Association, which prohibits government interference and requires free and fair elections. The suspension means that CAN will not be entitled to receive any ICC funding. However, the Board, in its absolute discretion and considering that the players should not suffer due to this suspension, decided that the Nepal cricket teams would be able to continue to feature in ICC events. ICC management will also now work with the Nepalese cricket community, and other stakeholders, in order to assist with the development of a sustainable governance and administration structure for cricket in Nepal. The Board maintained that it doesn’t accept government interference in the affairs of its Members as it wants all its Members to work independently with the best intentions of promoting and developing the game in their respective territories in accordance with the ICC’s objectives and strategy. Thousand of litres of illicit liquor have been seized and destroyed in the Nepali capital in the past three years, police records show. However, despite attempts by police to discourage production and consumption of hooch, the business of home-made liquor has been flourishing in the Kathmandu Valley, Xinhua reported citing local media. The context of alcohol use is diverse and differs widely by gender. Access to the alcohol market is more available to men than women. While men drink both inside and outside the home, women's drinking is mostly confined to the house. But it is the women who are mostly th e producers of the homemade alcohol. Police said 100,000 liters of liquor have been seized and destroyed in the past three years. At least 85 people have been arrested in the last three years for these offenses.

The United States is reportedly planning to deploy more troops to Syria under the pretext of fighting against terrorism. The report, published by the Wall Street Journal, says Washington will send 250 personnel to the war-torn country. This would bring to 300 the total number of American troops in Syria. The report added that U-S President Barak Obama will make the announcement on Monday. The White House says its ground troops will help in the fight against Daesh terrorists. The reconstruction of the monuments damaged during the massive earthquake of April 25 at the famed Basantapur Durbar Square has officially kicked off today. Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel launched the reconstruction phase starting from Bangshagopal Temple amidst a programme held here.Poudel said the government failed to lend pace to the reconstruction of the cultural monuments, heritages and houses destroyed or damaged during the earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks. Speaking to journalists, lawmaker Nabindra Raj Joshi at the same programme said the monuments should be rebuilt without tampering with its originality. RSS
